The Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji is immortalised in an epic drama that has been playing across India and outside it for 21 years now. Over 735 shows, 250 artistes and an audience of over 80 lakh people later, Raja has become a spectacle that is renowned for its technical excellence. A fusion of contemporary Balinese dance and drama with techniques that are thought to have been used in ancient Greek theatre, the play has travelled far and wide.
The play was created by the acclaimed historian Shiv Shahir Babasahed Purandare. Set in the 17th century, it transported spectators back to Shivaji’s era with horses, camels and a replica of Shaniwar Wada as the backdrop. The addition of two elephants and a mighty fort elevated the experience, leaving spectators enthralled. The entire production was curated by Padma Vibhushan awardee and historian, Shiv Shahir Babasahed Punekar.
A long time friend of Raja, Duggal was the Rajaplay closest thing he had to a father growing up. Though he wouldn’t admit it he was one of the most influential figures in Raja’s life. He was also a man of great strength who didn’t fear the outside world and showed Raja the brutal truths of the outside world.
Despite his flaws Duggal was still a very loving person and he taught Raja to always be kind no matter what the circumstances. He also taught Raja to be a strong leader and that the best way to achieve something was through fighting for it. He also taught him that in the end it was better to die a glorious death then to live a hollow life.
Although he was a brilliant strategist Raja didn’t have the heart of a true warrior. He was a good man at heart but he was unable to control his anger. He would often get into heated arguments with his friends and even if he didn’t mean to he would hurt them. Fortunately for them they had each other and this helped keep their friendships alive.
The two are now close friends who are often seen together at different casinos. They have an extensive social media presence and have many followers. They have also been featured on many online articles and documentaries. Their relationship is strictly platonic but they do enjoy spending time together. While they enjoy gambling and slot machines together they have never discussed whether their relationship is romantic or not.
